Memo for SRA

TO: PROF. CRYSTAL RODWELL

FROM: ALBA HYSAJ

SUBJECT: MY PROGRESS IN WRITING

The purpose of this memo is to provide an in-depth reflection of my progress in writing as determined in my scientific report analysis of the article “Development and validation of an interpretable deep learning framework for Alzheimer’s disease classification”. This reflection of my progress is based on the fact that writing an academically convincing paper require good use of rhetorical strategies. While doing the critical analysis of the scientific report, I realized that the author made sense from the report through rhetorical strategies such as pathos, logos, ethos, and logical fallacies, among others. In order to write a persuasive paper that will not only convince but also appeal the reader, it is essentially suitable to incorporate the different persuasive appeals such as ethos, logos, and pathos, among others.

My writing lacked proper use of pathos. Though I can say that I have a good writing style, I realized that my writing is weak, especially concerning the use of pathos. I have not been using visual aids to help explain my arguments clearly. In the report authored by Qui and his co-authors, the scholars used visual aids that did well in assisting them in illustrating and explaining their argument. For instance, when the authors used figures that helped them effectively present their idea, a very strategic model can underscore the rationality and soundness of the deep learning system.

I have determined that my writings do not make good use of logos. In most cases, I have failed to back up my arguments with relevant cases or examples. While working on the report analysis by Qui and his co-authors, I realized that the scholars made excellent use of logos to help them make inductive reasoning.

Another thing that I have determined with my writing is the light use of logical fallacies. In most of my papers, I have not recognized contrary arguments by authors. My writings often consider positive arguments supporting my claims. The scientific report by Qui and his co-authors made good use of logical fallacies, comparing contradicting arguments then making a general conclusion.

I have determined that my writings exhibit, though not an excellent but rather good use of ethos. I have always established my facts and backed them up with scholarly arguments from peer-reviewed sources in my writings. This has helped me make clear my arguments and prove their authenticity based on what scholars have said in regards to the point I am trying to make.

Based on my writing progress, I take it as a challenge to start making good use of all rhetorical strategies to make my writings convincing and appealing to the readers. Most specifically, I will begin incorporating logical fallacies in my writings to prove that before I made a choice or conclusion on the argument presented, I had to consider all possible arguments about the point.  Though I have used ethos in my writings, I will strive to make it successful. I have seen how the use of persuasive strategies helps in making sound arguments. I plan to join the league by doing the same.
